Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is recruiting EMS faculty members to support the EMS Fellowship Program and the expanding activities of the Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine. WMed is one of the newest medical schools in the U.S. and has one of the largest emergency medicine residency programs in the nation. WMed's EMS Fellowship Program was among the first ACGME-accredited EMS Fellowships. WMed residents and fellows are integrally involved in the county wide EMS system, with dedicated resident and fellow EMS response vehicles.
The WMed Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine provides a wide variety of services including medical direction, education, research, and health-care preparedness. The Kalamazoo County Medical Control Authority (KCMCA) is the state-designed agency responsible for coordinating all aspects of the county-wide EMS system. KCMCA is housed within the Division, allowing for full integration between WMed and the EMS system. The Division houses the 5th District Medical Response Coalition (5DMRC), a 9-county consortium of hospitals, EMS, public health, emergency management, and others dedicated to cross-jurisdictional, interdisciplinary disaster planning and response. The 5DMRC was designated by the CDC as a model for preparedness and collaboration. 5DMRC and the Division operate a mobile medical field unit on behalf of the State of Michigan. The Division additionally coordinates Michigan's National Disaster Life Support Program activities. The State EMS Data Manager is housed within the Division, making access to over 8 million EMS records readily available for research and quality improvement.

This faculty position is responsible for fulfilling a variety of important functions within the WMed Department of Emergency Medicine and its Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine. In addition to serving as a core EM/EMS faculty member teaching students, residents, and fellows, the academic aspect of the position includes research and programmatic (including grant) activities. As Regional Medical Director for Healthcare Preparedness, the position is responsible for providing medical direction and leadership to the 5th District Medical Response Coalition. As Associate EMS Medical Director for the Kalamazoo County Medical Control Authority, the position supports the Kalamazoo County EMS system. Finally, the position is expected to deliver high quality clinical emergency medicine.

As one of the newer US medical schools, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Ascension Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. The School of Medicine Clinics are housed in a modern 60,000 square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus and are accredited by The Joint Commission with recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. The 350,000 square foot educational building on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo underwent a $78 million renovation and expansion project including two laboratory research floors and a state-of-the-art Simulation Center that is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus is a life science, technology, and engineering incubator serving the earliest startups to maturing companies with laboratory, office and conference space, access to core scientific equipment and expertise, and a wide range of support services.
