Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking an IT Security Analyst.  Responsible for providing assessing information risks and facilitates remediation of identified vulnerabilities for IT security and IT risks across the organization. 



  • Design secure, efficient server templates and configurations
  • Perform daily system monitoring, focusing on security, integrity, and reliability
  • Investigate potential or actual security violations or incidents to help identify areas that require new security measures
  • Support the installation and use of software, such as firewalls and data encryption programs, to protect sensitive information
  • Prepare reports that document security breaches and the extent of the damage caused by the breaches
  • May conduct system audits and would execute on any audit findings
  • Conduct penetration testing to look for vulnerabilities in WMed systems before they can be exploited
  • Research the latest information technology security trends and develop security standards and best practices
  • Help plan and carry out WMed’s handling of IT security
  • Recommend security enhancement to IT management
  • Assist computer users with new security procedures
  • Work with others in the department to ensure industry best practices are followed for user and access management
  • Help to ensure all managed systems are following organizational and department policies and standards for software and firmware updates
  • Work with IT Infrastructure Manager to design, implement, and maintain guidelines, policies, and procedures to meet industry best practices for information security
  • All other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, programming or related field
  • Minimum three years’ experience in network or systems administration.
  • Solid technical knowledge with current versions of Windows, Windows Server, OSX, SQL Server, MySQL, Linux.
  • Strong working knowledge of IT industry security best practices.

Additional skills preferred:

  • Experience adhering to HIPAA/HiTech, FERPA, and 21CFR Part 11 guidelines.
  • Experience with IBM QRadar, Tenable Nessus
  • Experience securing enterprise directories including NetIQ eDirectory and Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Familiarity with FortiNet, Extreme Networks, Aruba Networks, and NetApp
  • Familiarity with ZenWorks End Point and Patch Management


  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or related certification preferred

As one of the newer US medical schools, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University, which ranks among the 50 largest colleges and universities and among the top 100 national public doctoral universities in the US, and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. The program leading to the MD degree was accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2012, and the inaugural class began in 2014. The School of Medicine Clinics are housed in a modern 60,000 square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus and are accredited by The Joint Commission with recognition by National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. The 350,000 square foot educational building on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion project including a state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In 2016, an additional $10 million expansion created two floors supporting clinical and laboratory research, and the Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus became part of the medical school. There are more than 200 residents and fellows in eight residencies and two fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). WMed is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for continuing medical education.
