    Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a Senior Laboratory Manager within the Center for Immunobiology.  The Senior Laboratory Manager work involves basic and translational research in immunology to address key questions relating to B cell development and function in studies carried out in animal models and/or with patient samples.

     

    The successful applicant will have the opportunity to co-manage an innovative research lab and perform laboratory research using innovative techniques.  This is a unique role that supports the management of diverse projects while also participating in discovery-based research (http://med.wmich.edu/node/47).

     

    Successful applicants will have excellent writing skills and broad-based research expertise in cellular and molecular immunology, stem cell and developmental biology, and/or flow cytometry / cell-sorting techniques. The most central aspect of this position is overall management of all laboratory projects and to ensure continuity of knowledge as personnel changes. The successful candidate will also lead their own research project and participate in manuscript editing. Administrative skills are important, and other duties will be dependent on interests.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Communicates problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature within the department and interdepartmentally utilizing computer technology.
    • Conducts research independently using one’s own discretion and judgment.
    • Analyzes data and interprets results to write reports and summaries of findings.
    • Attends meetings of importance.
    • Maintains accurate records of tests conducted, results, data and patients tested including calculation of results from supplied data, obtained data and statistics for quality assurance.
    • Maintains equipment and inventory through making minor adjustments, performing scheduled maintenance, and troubleshooting major problems utilizing departmental resources and manufacturers telephone trouble lines.
    • Develops and manages instruction in laboratory technique, instrumentation, and application of laboratory test procedures to new technologists or technicians and students.
    • Assists supervisor and lab members in the development of technical procedures and protocols.
    • Organizes and prioritizes work to meet specific goals and accomplishments.
    • Assists lab members with the development of technical procedures and protocols.
    • Oversees all activities in the lab. Manages lab technician’s time and attendance.
    • Manages technician’s lab activities.
    • Evaluates lab members and provides feedback to department managers.
    • Maintains clean and efficient work area and replenishes supplies as necessary. Responsible for inventory maintenance
    • Isolates and cultures primary lymphocytes.
    • Manages and directs various assays on purified populations including one or more of the following:
    • Immunoflorescent staining
    • ELISPOT
    • ELISA
    • RNA isolation/RT-PCR
    • Expression cloning
    • Protein extraction/Western blotting
    • Additional functional assays
    • Coordinates activities with collaborating investigators.
    • Prepares stock solutions and reagents.
    • Tests serum and complement.
    • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
    • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Ph.D. degree preferred, preferably in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field. 
    • Applications must demonstrate excellent English writing skills. 
    • Applicants should have an existing track record of research productivity and should be capable ofIndependent research.
    • Minimum five years' experience required in a research lab. Experience managing activities in a lab required.
    • Required skills include experience with four or more of the following: sterile tissue culture, flow cytometric analysis, RNA and protein extraction, vertical and horizontal gel electrophoresis, protein immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, polymerase chain reaction, and molecular cloning
    • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
    • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

    As a newer US medical school, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. Planning for the new medical school began in 2008 and achieved full accreditation of the MD program by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2018, and candidate status for institutional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2016.  The school welcomed its inaugural class in August 2014, and is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation supported by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, tuition, and endowment income. The home of the new medical school includes the WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Clinics, a modern 60,000-square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus, and a 350,000-square foot educational building in downtown Kalamazoo located on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus. The building, donated by MPI Research, underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion project, including a 24,000 state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In 2016, an additional $10 million expansion created two floors supporting clinical and laboratory research, and the medical school acquired the Innovation Center, a 69,000-square foot, purpose-built incubator and co-working space, located on the Parkview Campus.

     

    There are more than 200 residents and fellows in nine residencies and three fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). WMed is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for continuing medical education.
