    Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Human Resources Generalist.  Responsible for performing human resources related duties at the professional level and may carry out responsibilities in some or all of the following functional areas: recruitment and selection, policy and procedure development and implementation, employee relations and law, immigration, benefit administration, performance evaluations, human resources metrics and reporting.




    • Utilizes HR metrics to evaluate activities and assist in the achievement of overall organization goals and objectives.
    • Assist with benefit strategy and administration.
    • Provides department administration of the HRIS including routine and ad-hoc report generation.
    • Assists with employee relations climate surveys and workflow studies. 
    • May assist with recruitment and onboarding.
    • May assist with the organization's salary and benefit administration programs.
    • Responsible for oversight of the organization’s performance management program.
    • Assists with the organization’s affirmative action plan.
    • Responsible for administration and oversight of the organization’s on-line training system.
    • May serve as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
    • May assist with policy and procedure revisions; provides education and awareness to organization as appropriate. 
    • Assists with internal investigations, including strategically recommending actions.
    • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
    • Assists with communications from Human Resources Department to various stakeholders.
    • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
    • All other duties as assigned.


    • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or related human relations discipline.
    • Three to five years as a human resources generalist, preferably in a health care or education environment required.
    • Background using Kronos HRIS preferred.
    • Broad knowledge of human resources functions including salary and benefit administration, policy and procedures, labor law compliance, internal investigation, and employee relations.
    • Experience with statistics and or quantitative methods commonly utilized in HR metrics.
    • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification through the HR Certification Institute highly preferred.
    • Well-developed knowledge of human resources functions including methodologies, workflows and reporting tools.
    • Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local regulations pertaining to employment.
    • Experience with Title IX coordination highly preferred.
    • Highly proficient using Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Adobe Acrobat, email, scanning and document management software, and internet research skills.
    • Strong teamwork and collaborative skills along with a strong customer focus.

    As a newer US medical school, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. Planning for the new medical school began in 2008 and achieved full accreditation of the MD program by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2018, and candidate status for institutional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2016.  The school welcomed its inaugural class in August 2014, and is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation supported by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, tuition, and endowment income. The home of the new medical school includes the WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Clinics, a modern 60,000-square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus, and a 350,000-square foot educational building in downtown Kalamazoo located on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus. The building, donated by MPI Research, underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion project, including a 24,000 state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In 2016, an additional $10 million expansion created two floors supporting clinical and laboratory research, and the medical school acquired the Innovation Center, a 69,000-square foot, purpose-built incubator and co-working space, located on the Parkview Campus.


    There are more than 200 residents and fellows in nine residencies and three fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). WMed is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for continuing medical education.
