    Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a Data Specialist within the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.  The database specialist will be expected to address the database needs of a growing medical school. This will include developing, implementing, and maintaining multiple databases for the school. Databases may include those needed for reporting to institutional accreditation agencies, monitoring and reporting internal student and faculty satisfaction with curriculum, and primary/secondary research databases.


    • Design, develop, and test new databases in collaboration with faculty and staff to meet their growing research and reporting needs
    • Monitor and maintain integrity of database(s) through regular quality checks and enforcement of WMed policies regarding database management
    • Develop access to data collected within the database(s) (i.e. data request or limited access for predetermined individuals)
    • Monitor access to and security of database(s)
    • Provide support to faculty, residents, students, and staff in the use of WMed databases, working with IT to provide technical assistance and troubleshooting
    • Provide faculty and staff with necessary training to input and extract data
    • Designing and preparing query-based reports for course directors
    • Optimize database use across the organization by staying current on upcoming enhancements to functionality and guiding faculty and staff in the appropriate use of existing functionality
    • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
    • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
    • All other duties as assigned.


    • Bachelor degree in Computer Science or Information Technology preferred
    • Related experience and/or certifications may be considered in place of a degree
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills
    • Working knowledge of REDCap a plus.

    • Strong collaborative skills
    • Remain up-to-date in knowledge of technology
    • Strong Microsoft Office Skills, particularly in Excel and Access
    • Deep understanding of Structured Query Language (SQL)
    • Knowledge of and experience with relational database management systems, object oriented systems, and XML database management systems
    • Excellent communication skills

The 350,000 square foot educational building on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo underwent a $78 million renovation and expansion project including two laboratory research floors and a state-of-the-art Simulation Center that is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus is a life science, technology, and engineering incubator serving the earliest startups to maturing companies with laboratory, office and conference space, access to core scientific equipment and expertise, and a wide range of support services.
