  • Overview

    Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine is recruiting for an Accounting Manager.  The ideal candidate will manage accounting and payroll functions under the general direction of the Senior Director, Accounting & Controller, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures. Provides oversight and coordination of operating reports and statutory filings. Establishes and maintains financial controls. Responsible for daily direction of accounting staff, providing direct supervisory support as assigned.

    Responsibilities

     

    • Manages the accounting functions under the general direction of the Senior Director, Accounting & Controller, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
    • Recruits, trains, manages, and mentors assigned accounting staff.
    • Oversees review and reconciliation of all accounting transactions related to payroll, general and student accounts receivables, accounts payables, grants and sponsored awards, and fixed assets while maintaining strong internal controls.
    • Manages the month-end and year-end closing process and reviews monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations. Ensure accurate and timely closings.
    • Reviews financial statements for reasonableness and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
    • Maintains the integrity of the financial accounting system and produces reports for management use.
    • Prepares and reviews account reconciliations and accruals for accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
    • Provides oversight and coordination of tax and statutory filings.
    • Manages and/or generates and files all required tax returns, statements and/or payments.
    • Oversees all benefit audits.
    • Conducts asset and inventory valuations.
    • Prepares detailed reports and presentations for review by all levels of management.
    • Communicates effectively with both accounting and non-accounting team members.
    • Acts as an accounting application(s) system administrator and workflow analyst.
    • Remains up to date with new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
    • Leads and manages projects and continuous improvement efforts as defined by the Senior Director, Accounting & Controller.
    • Assists with preparation of annual budget and related analysis, including variance reporting .
    • Assists with preparing and maintaining departmental strategic direction and budget for the accounting department, aligning department and personal goals to help achieve the organization’s objectives.
    • Availability to work evenings and weekends to complete time sensitive or seasonal projects.
    • Availability for overnight/out-of-town travel.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required. 
    • Four years’ experience in public accounting or six years of experience in managerial accounting required.
    • Proficiency with GAAP, IRS Code, FASB, auditing, payroll processing, fixed asset accounting, tax filing requirements, and strong financial analytics.
    • High level of proficiency in ERP systems, data mining systems, Excel and Microsoft Word, Crystal Reports (or similar reporting tool), and related office productivity tools.
    • Strong supervisory and analytical skills.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver timely results. 

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

    • CPA or CMA required.

    • High level of organizational skills and ability to concurrently manage multiple tasks.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
    • Broad knowledge of organizational and departmental policy and procedure.
    • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
    • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed data accurately.
    • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.

The Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus is a life science, technology, and engineering incubator serving the earliest startups to maturing companies with laboratory, office and conference space, access to core scientific equipment and expertise, and a wide range of support services.
