Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding emergency medicine physician leader who is a visionary that can build on an extremely successful emergency medicine residency, EMS fellowship and collaborative working relationships with 2 local hospital emergency medicine departments.

 

The successful Department Chair candidate will:

  • Have a substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine, education, and research.
  • Understand the importance of fostering a supportive workplace culture.
  • Share our vision for health equity for all in Southwest Michigan through innovation in the practice and study of medicine.

 The Chair must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Effectively steward department resources.
  • Understand, appreciate, and guide the development of training and research programs.
  • Establish productive working relationships with employed and community faculty, staff, residents, students, and administration.
  • Effectively support the distinct academic and clinical partnerships for the Department of emergency medicine.
  • Be able to represent the department and medical school in various local, regional, and national venues.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO and Dean of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, the successful candidate will lead the department including the EM residency, the EMS fellowship, and liaison with our hospital partners’ emergency medicine departments. The Chair will work in concert with the dean of the medical school and must demonstrate the highest level of personal and professional commitment, enthusiasm, integrity, and support of the medical school and its mission, vision, and values. The Chair will align the department with other departments and units of the medical school and strive to achieve excellence in all aspects of department operations.

Qualifications

Education and experience:

  • MD or DO or equivalent degree required.
  • Completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
  • Must maintain a faculty appointment at the medical school.
  • Qualified for appointment of associate professor or professor.
  • Broad understanding of academic medical centers and faculty roles.
  • Broad knowledge of EM organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine and education.

License or certification:

  • Board certification/preparation in Emergency Medicine by either ABEM or AOBEM required.
  • Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Michigan.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to function as an EM physician.
  • Ability to function as an EMS physician.
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 300, 400.
  • FEMA IS 700 and 800.
  • Experience with medical simulation.
  • Familiarity with EMS training and direction.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program and two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

 

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.

 

WMed is building upon Kalamazoo’s century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research.
