The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is leading change with our patient-centered medical home model, performance improvement initiatives, and focus on improving operating efficiency. The DFCM has a new chair supporting its young, dynamic faculty with a focus on faculty development, education, and seed grants, while providing generous CME and licensing support. Our dually accredited ACGME/AOA 9-9-9 Kalamazoo-based residency is housed in our newly acquired clinic space expanding to provide 20 clinic rooms and departmental offices ideally located to serve the community. Please note we have a separate posting for a non-OB faculty position at our new ACGME accredited 6-6-6 family medicine residency in Battle Creek, based in a beautiful FQHC.  The DFCM is home to a Street Medicine Program, Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Hospice & Palliative Care Fellowship caring for the underserved and a diverse community.  WMed enrolled its first class of medical students in 2014, which provides our faculty with the unique opportunity to be actively involved in the ongoing growth of a newer school. • Providing clinical services through resident supervision and patient care.
• Providing full scope family medicine including inpatient, outpatient, and obstetrics care.
• Participating in the WMed systems of quality improvement, utilization review, and outcomes management.
• Recruitment, supervision, education, and assessment of resident physicians.
• Providing high-quality instruction for undergraduate medical education.
• Other duties as assigned by the Department.

• MD or DO degree.
• Completion of residency program from an accredited program.
• Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.
• Eligibility for Michigan medical license.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program and two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.

WMed is building upon Kalamazoo’s century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research. The Center for Immunobiology, Center for Clinical Research, Research Histology Lab, Innovation Center, and Human Research Protection Program contribute to the medical school’s advancement of knowledge through innovation and discovery.
