Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) seeks a driven Administrative Director for our Simulation Center. Responsible for the day-to-day administration and operation of the Western Michigan University School of Medicine Simulation Center. Directs all of the Center’s operations, including the accreditation of educational programs, regulatory compliance of activities, and supervision of operational staff. Responsible for the maintenance and operation of all of the hardware and software associated with the Simulation Center. Participates in programmatic grant-writing and grant administrative activities. Participates in business development activities with hospital partners and external customers for revenue generation. Serves as the liaison to visitors of the Simulation Center.

Responsibilities

  • Will need to travel occasionally throughout Michigan and out of state.
  • May be responsible for operating WMed Vehicles occasionally.
  • Provides strategic leadership for the administrative and operational responsibilities of the Simulation Center.
  • Responsible for organizing, leading and generating invoices for mobile simulation events at locations outside the WMed Simulation Center.
  • Recruits, manages, reviews, coaches and develops operation staff to ensure effective maintenance and operation of all programs.
  • Maintains adequate staffing levels.
  • Develops, update and implement the Simulation Center’s business plan.
  • Develops and maintains Simulation Center budget, manages funding sources, ensures contracts are maintained and revenue sources maximized.
  • Develops and implement policies, procedures and practice standards consistent with Simulation Center mission and educational objectives.
  • Assures regulatory compliance with the Simulation Center’s activities.
  • Collaborates with faculty and other personnel to develop and coordinate education, laboratory and research projects.
  • Achieves and assures ongoing accreditation of the Simulation Center’s educational programs.
  • Understands the use and operation of different simulation technologies.
  • Oversees annual program quality assurance plans for the Simulation Center.
  • Develops data collection and record keeping procedures to evaluate student learning that comply with standards for medical training.
  • Manages the operation, purchasing, inventory, maintenance of all equipment and software systems within the Simulation Center.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of training among users. Develop a training calendar and reservation process.
  • Work with department leadership to establish priorities and maximize operational time.
  • Promotes the interests of the Simulation Center through participation in public events, development of new markets for simulation use, community outreaches and serving on professional organizations and committee meetings as the Simulation Center representative.
  • Lead tours of the Simulation Center and demonstrate equipment to new users and visitors.
  • Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Master’s degree in healthcare, education, business or related field required.
  • Five years of clinical experience including exposure to a wide range of patient populations (e.g., adult, pediatric medical and trauma) preferred.
  • Three years of educational instruction training preferred.
  • Three to five years personnel management or supervisory experience required.
  • Three to five years’ experience with business development, budget management and strategic planning required.
  • One year of experience coordinating healthcare education programs preferred.
  • Experience with medical simulation is highly desirable.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: 

  • ACLS preferred or preferred to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • BLS Required or required to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid Michigan Driver License required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Proficient in the use of the Simulation Center’s management software and LCMS+.
  • Proficiency in use of project management software.
  • Computer proficiency in PC and Mac-based software applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Understands the principles of adult learning.
  • Maintains satisfactory level of knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology and clinical applications.
  • Ability to develop simulation cases involving both human patient simulators and standardized patients.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use multiple educational debriefing techniques.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of project management theories, principles, practices and processes.
  • Ability to plan and implement complex projects and/or new services.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, supervise and mentor staff.
  • Experience in grant-writing, grant administration and the development of funding sources.
  • Knowledge of programming software for Laerdal and Gaumard patient simulators preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to repair Laerdal and Gaumard patient simulators preferred.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
