Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking an Anatomist. The Anatomist is a pivotal role within the Department of Biomedical Sciences, designed to support and enhance the educational experience in the gross anatomy lab for students enrolled in the Medical and Graduate curricula. This role involves a blend of student support, pedagogical assistance, assessment coordination, and lab management duties, aimed at fostering a conducive learning environment, ensuring lab safety, and contributing to the academic success of students.

Responsibilities

  • Student Support
    • Provide hands-on assistance during labs. 
    • Hold weekly open lab hours for additional support and guidance in gross anatomy.
    • Organize and conduct 1:1 or small group sessions, when needed, to review anatomical structures, prepare for remediations, and review missed labs.
  • Pedagogical Support
    • Collaborate in the creation of pre-lab materials.
    • Work with anatomy faculty to set up for gross anatomy labs and assist in clean up after lab events.
    • Assist in building and teaching the anatomy curriculum in the medical curriculum and the Masters of Biomedical Sciences program
    • Direct students in elective dissections and assist in prosection preparations, when needed.  
  • Assessment Creation & Support
    • Facilitate anatomy practical exams by assisting in setup, proctoring, and grading.
    • Manage the preparation, delivery, and data handling of pre-lab quizzes.
    • Prepare and deliver pre-lab quiz remediations and ensure follow-up with students requiring additional support.
  • Lab Management & Safety
    • Maintain and schedule lab use for various stakeholders within WMed and the community, ensuring efficient utilization of resources.
    • Develop and enforce lab safety protocols, including the creation and oversight of liability forms and standards for lab and donor resource use.
    • Ensure lab cleanliness and compliance with professional best practices for the respectful use and care of donor resources.
    • Coordinate with the anatomy team to uphold high standards of lab operation and safety.
  • Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Master’s degree in Anatomy or related field, required.
  • Documented evidence of teaching effectiveness and experience in gross anatomy.
  • Proficiency in dissection and prosection techniques.
  • Experience in lab management, particularly in a gross anatomy setting.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and community members.
  • Strong commitment to high safety and ethical standards in the care of a gross anatomy lab and donor resources

The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
