Overview

WMU Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking a Manager, Accounting and Controller for the Finance Department. Responsible for managing the accounting and payroll functions, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.  Leads and directs the organization’s financial and other external audits. Ensures auditing department provides a continuous risk-based review and evaluation of the organization's internal control structure, including its efficiency and effectiveness of operations, reliability of financial reporting, and compliance with laws and regulations. Provides oversight and coordination of operating reports and statutory filings as assigned. Oversees treasury functions. Responsible for supervision of assigned support staff responsible for duties involving payroll, student billing, grants and sponsored awards, monthly financial close process, annual external audit processes and treasury.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the accounting functions including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Responsible to direct and mentor support staff including recruitment, training, coaching and effective performance management of those responsible for payroll, student billing, external audit schedules, monthly financial close process, and grants and sponsored awards.
  • Responsible for treasury functions related to disbursments, custody of funds, and other financial instruments.
  • Oversees the review and reconciliation of all accounting transactions related to payroll, general and student accounts receivables, and grants and sponsored awards while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Manages the month-end and year-end closing process and reviews monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations. This includes ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded; review of journal entries, account balance reconciliations, and report preparation for an accurate and timely closing.
  • Reviews financial statements for reasonableness, accuracy, and compliance with GAAP.
  • Responsible for researching and implementing new accounting standards.
  • Oversees the compilation and distribution of periodic end user financial reports.
  • Prepares and reviews account reconciliations and accruals for accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
  • Provides oversight and coordination of tax and statutory filings as assigned.
  • Manages and/or generates and files all required tax returns (payroll related), statements and/or payments.
  • Acts as a liaison between WMed and the outside auditors in providing the required information and ensuring that the proper information is stored for historical purposes.
  • Prepares and distributes detailed reports and presentations for review by all levels of management.
  • Assists with the development, implementation and ongoing integrity of the financial accounting system.
  • Acts as an accounting application(s) system administrator and workflow analyst. Confers with user departments to identify system requirements and solve moderately complex business problems. Analyzes and revises existing system use logic.
  • Remains up to date with new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • Partners with Human Resources and Information Technology on continuous improvement of the Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
  • Assists with the design and use of the HRIS software by facilitating group discussions related to the system. Writes and maintain standard operating procedures related to the HRIS system. Writes, generates, and maintains standard and custom reports used by the organization. Develops policies and procedures related to system use.
  • Works closely with Human Resources on WMed benefit plans. Oversees benefit plan audits.
  • May conduct periodic and/or special studies/analysis. Reviews, evaluates, and monitors organizational and departmental strategies, and policies and procedures as they apply to the assigned accounting functions to insure that they are applied effectively and consistently.
  • Evaluate and monitor internal controls along with efficiency and effectiveness of departmental procedures, recommends and implements changes to internal controls and procedures when necessary.
  • Leads and manages projects and continuous improvement efforts as defined by the Senior Director, Accounting and Finance.
  • Assists in setting and maintaining strategic direction for the accounting department, and aligning department and personal goals to help achieve its objectives and the organization’s objectives.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends to complete time sensitive or seasonal projects.
  • Availability for overnight/out-of-town travel.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • Seven years related experience including payroll management .
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal and procedural requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply professional principles and standards.
  • Ability to analyze highly complex fiscal data and operating procedures, and make projections and recommendations.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), auditing, payroll processing, fixed asset accounting, and tax filing requirements.
  • High level of proficiency in finance-specific applications including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Excel and Microsoft Word, and related office productivity tools.
  • Strong management, mentorship, and leadership ability.
  • Abilitiy to exercise independent judgment; organize and prioritize work of others; establish and maintain working relationships; maintain impartiality and objectivity.
  • Grant administration preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: 

Current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred.
