Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is recruiting a Senior Accountant.  Responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management and payroll. Supervises the payroll process to ensure proper processing of earnings, deductions, and payroll taxes. Performs accounting functions for month end closing process. Leads and participates in the organizations financial and other external audits. Completes reports and statutory filings as assigned. Directs the receipt and disbursement of funds and other treasury activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management and payroll.
  • Performs general ledger functions for month end closing process. Prepares or reviews payroll and benefits related journal entries and other miscellaneous entries.
  • Performs general ledger reconciliations for benefit accounts and other balance sheet accounts as needed.
  • Oversees the payroll process and final review.
  • Participates in the resolution of payroll related issues.
  • Oversees cashflow tracking and the disbursement of funds.
  • Assists in annual year-end financial audit and benefit plan audits.
  • Partners with Human Resources and Information Technology on continuous improvement of the Human Resources Information System (HRIS). May act as team lead for some projects related to the design and use of the HRIS software by facilitating group discussions related to the system. Writes and maintain standard operating procedures related to the HRIS system.
  • Writes, generates, and maintains standard and custom reports used during payroll processes.
  • Directs the work of the accounting coordinator.
  • Completes the reconciliation of monthly benefit bills and recommends corrective action necessary to resolve issues.
  • Provides training to accounting coordinator as assigned, and participates in maintaining training materials for personnel involved in accounting and payroll related processes.
  • Completes and files required tax filings on a timely basis.
  • Availability to work on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting plus minimum five years accounting experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of personal computing systems and basic to advanced knowledge of accounting software packages.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel or other spreadsheet programs also required.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Broad knowledge of organizational operations and policies relating to financial management, budget, accounting, and payroll.
  • Ability to provide oversight and coordination of operating reports and statutory filings.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information skillfully to develop goals and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
