Overview

Western Michigan University M.D. Homer Stryker School of Medicine (WMed) is currently seeking a Patient Account Specialist to join our Patient Billing team. Responsible for performing and/or coordinating all activities associated with accounts receivable.

 

Position offers the flexibility of a hybrid remote/on-site schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of duties involved in collecting balances due and recording payments to accounts.
  • Efficiently handles denied claims and actively works aged accounts in a timely manner.
  • Follows up with insurance companies on claim denials to seek a resolution.
  • Researches issues with third party vendors.
  • Resubmits claims to insurance companies upon proper interpretation of payer explanation of benefits and claim adjustment reason codes.
  • Logs, posts, and balances payments in accordance with established procedures.
  • Answers inquiries from patients regarding account statements, charges, insurance payments and balances due.
  • Follows up on delinquent accounts and sets up payment arrangements with patients, as necessary.
  • Submits claims to insurance companies. Prints and mails secondary/tertiary claims.
  • Prepares and transmits electronic claims submissions when applicable.
  • Reviews claims for errors and make corrections where required.
  • Works with insurance companies to perform insurance billing, review, and verification of accounts in accordance with program provisions.
  • Verifies patient insurance and third-party coverage information.
  • Works insurance credit balances and request refunds as necessary.
  • Provides quality customer service while adhering to HIPAA confidentiality standards.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one-year medical billing and accounts receivable experience required.
  • Basic excel skills preferred.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge and proficiency of EHR/Medical billing systems. Epic experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of eligibility verification using CHAMPS, Medicare and Blue Cross websites.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of CPT and ICD-10 coding.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as multi-line phone system, copier and fax machines.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
