Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is recruiting for a Medical Assistant who actively participates in coordination of patient flow and services with a focus on patient centered care. Collects patient information related to patient visit or procedure. Assists with procedures and administers approved medication. Assists physician and team members with patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Maintains a positive attitude while providing assistance in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary clinic. Assists in optimizing education for residents and students in Program rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Works alongside team members in various areas of the clinic to maintain staffing levels. This may include front desk/patient registration, referrals, and nursing.
  • Schedules and reschedules clinic appointments.
  • Enters patient demographic and insurance information into the EMR system.
  • Assists with patient flow and room assignments.
  • Obtains age-appropriate vital signs as needed.
  • Collects patient information pertinent to physician visit or procedure.
  • Assists physicians and team with treatment, tests, and orders.
  • Performs waived testing (UDS, Forensic Fluids, GeneSight Testing).
  • Administers medication as approved.
  • Documents patient care and actions per clinic standard.
  • Assists with the scheduling of diagnostic work-up, procedures and referrals.
  • Refers abnormal lab work to physician for appropriate follow up.
  • Assists with triaging of phone calls and calling patients back with provider recommendations.
  • Forwards prescription refills to providers.
  • Maintains equipment; orders supplies as needed.
  • Discusses day to day issues with team leader for resolution.
  • Directs incoming calls to appropriate resource.
  • Maintains CEUs required by certification/registration.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited program or equivalent education or experience preferred

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Eligible for certification or registration as Clinically Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA).
  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within three (3) months of hire.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and proficiency in EMR.
  • Ability to collect and document data from patients.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in waived testing.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in administering medications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Outlook.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
