Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a Community Education and Engagement Coordinator. The Community Education and Engagement Coordinator will work directly with the Associate Dean for Community Education and Engagement to help with coordination of our external relationships/partnerships with community organizations to advance our community engagement and education mission. The coordinator will work with WMed's diverse faculty, staff, residents, and students for community education and programming. This will include coordination of community organization activities, meetings and trainings. The coordinator will assist in both program evaluation related to community engagement and annual budgeting. The coordinator will work in collaboration with other departments and faculty to support their work in meeting and collaboration with community partners. The coordinator will work with course directors and curriculum coordinators to help with programming needs for education of medical students related to service learning components of the curriculum.

 

The Community Education and Engagement Coordinator will attend meetings with community organizations and schedule meetings with community based organizational leaders for recruitment of new sites as well as check-ins for sites that exist. This entails working with the longitudinal Engagement and Discovery course to assist course directors with site recruitment, site retention, student assignments to site, student engagement with sites and oversight of student activities by both WMed and community site. This will include coordination of meetings and facilitation of check-in information exchange. The coordinator will also work with the Associate Dean for Community Education and Engagement to support the Community Advisory Council. The coordinator will utilize their program knowledge to assist with grant proposals. The coordinator will also provide administrative support as needed including management of calendar for the Associate Dean for Community Education and Engagement.

 

This position will require the coordinator to have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and experience/knowledge for program evaluation. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently and as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance in the strategic planning, development, execution, management, and evaluation strategies while providing guidance to senior leadership and managers throughout the organization.
  • Coordinates meetings with departments/residencies/faculty for community engagement programs
  • Coordinates meetings with external Kalamazoo community organizations for site placements for students in the Engagement and Discovery(E&D) course and manages relationship check-ins
  • Attends in class sessions for the course as needed and directed by course director
  • Participates in meetings with the course directors/faculty and serves as a liaison for them and the students as needed .
  • Collaborate across WMed to understand key strategic workstreams, priorities and deliverables that work for the strategic initiatives.
  • Key role: Oversee the implementation of several trainings and initiatives to support medical students and residents with community engagement and responsiveness
    • Trainings:
      • Coordinates meetings with panelists from the external community for education
      • Community Advisory Council
    • Initiatives:
      • Community Engagement and Health Systems education
      • Programming to create a sense of connection and belonging (such as events to gather and promote individual and organizational well-being).
  • Collaborate with student groups and student affairs, campus departments, faculty and community partners to determine needs and plan for cultural and educational initiatives as deemed appropriate.
  • Enhance current programs and create new engagements
  • Develop, implement, and effectively communicate initiative updates with the input of key partners (HR, Communications, SAC, FAC, etc.) and leadership.
  • Assist with proposing operating and program budgets.
  • Assist with marketing, communications, and community outreach.
  • Support departmental and campus initiatives that promote community relationships through cultural humility and multicultural excellence.
  • Assist with program evaluation and the assessment of current operations for continuous improvement.
  • Stay informed of national trends and current publications on relevant community and education topics.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquire knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or higher in relevant fields such as Higher Education Administration, Evaluation and Assessment, Cultural and linguistic studies, College Student Personnel, or a Social Sciences or Humanities discipline, preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time professional experience in programming and outreach efforts related to community engagement, culture or student wellness, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Strategic planning experience/understanding
  • Experience/knowledge of program evaluation methodology
  • Experience working with a diverse populations.
  • Supervisory experience (student supervision may be required).

  • Content familiarity and a commitment to stay current on issues pertaining to culture(student, organizational, community organizations), public health needs, health disparities within the community and wellness (both broadly in the community and specifically for students and organization populations served).
  • Strong project management skills and ability to track details across multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to engage in strategic planning processes.
  • Ability to coordinate/facilitate workgroups.
  • Strong written/verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, understanding the needs of various stakeholders.
  • Ability to listen to others and maintain professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Ability to role model exemplary ethical and professional behaviors and the medical school’s values for faculty, students, residents, and staff.
