Overview

WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is looking for an experienced Student Life Coordinator to join the team in Student Affairs. This highly-visible, student-facing role will focus on developing and supporting student-led initiatives to foster an inclusive environment and providing administrative and coordination support for Student Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Works hand-in-hand with the Director of Student Life and Well-Being to support Student Organizations and Student Interest Groups
  • Serve as Student Affairs advisor for all Student Organizations, assisting in travel arrangements for annual conference participation.
  • Serve as co-advisor for student interest groups with a diversity-based mission.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to specific, larger-scale, student-planned events including student-led affinity month programming, Specialty Speed Rounds, Big/Little Sibs programs and HeART of WMed.
  • Coordinates Student Organization and Student Interest Group training programs, informing students of policies and procedures for outreach, fundraisers, event planning, etc.
  • Partner with the Student Council treasurer to track their finances and stay on track; Collects documentation for reimbursements and processes them in collaboration with Administrative Assistant.
  • Oversee the student scrub order and distribution process, including sample sizes, size collecting, ordering, distributing, and fourth-year collection.
  • Develop relationships with students in the MBS program; coordinate and manage a formal mentor-mentee program for those in this program.
  • Counsels and provides support to students experiencing all levels of academic and non-academic concerns, problems, and questions. Identify and triage concerns, refer to the appropriate available resources, initiate contact and engage relevant referral sources, offer encouragement and support to students, and ensure that assistance has been made available.
  • Represent Student Affairs at designated committee meetings as assigned.
  • Serves as a member of the WMed social media team.
  • Availability to assist with large student affairs events such as graduation, match day, white coat ceremony, awards ceremony, and transitions week activities.
  • Staffs the Student Affairs front desk two days a week, and assists in PTO coverage on other days.
  • Provide support to the weekly student communication email content, serving as backup prover as needed.
  • Be present at several SIG or Organization events each month.
  • Availability to occasionally work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with experience in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel preferred.
  • Prior experience with graduate level student population is preferred.
  • Prior experience with event planning is strongly preferred.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong project management skills and ability to track details across multiple complex projects.
  • Strong written/verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in word processing using Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to operate automated standard office equipment such as multi-line phone system, copier, fax, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, understanding the needs of various stakeholders.
  • Ability to listen to others and maintain professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Ability to role model exemplary ethical and professional behaviors and the medical school’s values for faculty, students, residents, and staff.
  • Ability to listen, foster teamwork, and accept accountability.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
  • Ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas. Faculty in the Department of Pathology serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, faculty and administrative offices, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
