Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking a Manager, Culture, and Wellbeing in our People and Culture Department. The Manager, Culture, and Wellbeing plays a critical role in helping create a thriving, engaged, and resilient community at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and programming to foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture, prioritizing the wellbeing of employees and students through various initiatives, including wellbeing support, work-life balance programs, and employee and student engagement activities, while collaborating with HR, Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Resident Affairs, and WMed leadership to align policies and practices with the organizational values.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance in the strategic planning, development, execution, management, and evaluation of Culture, Wellbeing, and Belonging strategies while providing guidance on these topics to senior leadership and managers throughout the organization.
  • Manage strategic priorities to increase employee retention and engagement at WMed related to Culture, Wellbeing and Belonging in partnership with HR.
  • Design and execute employee (Staff, Faculty, Residents, Fellows) and student engagement initiatives to foster a sense of belonging and connection.
  • Partner with key stakeholders (HR, Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs, Resident Affairs) to measure engagement, identify areas for improvement, and action planning.
  • Organize team-building activities, recognition programs, and WMed-wide culture and wellbeing events to boost morale.
  • As a people-manager, provide supervision to the Specialist, Culture and Wellbeing.
  • Collaborate across WMed to understand and collaborate with key strategic workstreams, priorities, and deliverables for Culture and Wellbeing.
  • Serve as a member of the Culture Committee and the Culture Strategy Leadership Team.
  • Oversee the implementation of trainings to support WMed Culture. For example:
    • Culture Ambassador programs and deliverables
  • Collaborate with student groups, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), and various departments to determine needs and plan for cultural and educational initiatives.
  • Enhance current programs and create new programming that promotes culture and wellbeing and builds belonging at WMed.
  • Develop, implement, and effectively communicate initiative updates with the input of key partners (HR, Communications, SAC, FAC, etc.) and senior leadership.
  • Manage, generate, and analyze reports regarding Culture and Wellbeing initiatives for the organization to identify trends and insights that drive organizational improvement.
  • Assist with proposing operating and program budgets.
  • Lead marketing and communications for Culture and Wellbeing.
  • Lead departmental and campus initiatives that promote cultural humility and multicultural excellence.
  • Lead program evaluation and the assessment of current operations for continuous improvement.
  • Stay informed of national trends and current publications on relevant culture, wellbeing, belonging topics. Analyze data from trainings and programming related to culture, wellbeing, belonging, and engagement and provide reports and analytics to leadership.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time-sensitive projects.
  • Acquire knowledge of new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Organizational Psychology, HR, Higher Education Administration, Social Sciences or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in a culture and/or wellbeing management role, with a demonstrated ability to create and manage programs that support organizational culture and health. Medical school and/or higher education experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing employee engagement and wellbeing programs required.
  • Strong understanding of organizational culture dynamics and change management strategies is a must.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting required.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory/management experience required.
  • Strategic planning experience preferred.
  • Experience working with staff, faculty, Residents, Fellows, and students a plus.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to track details across complex projects.
  • Ability to engage in strategic planning processes.
  • Ability to coordinate/facilitate workgroups.
  • Strong written/verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, understanding the needs of various stakeholders.
  • Ability to listen to others and maintain professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Ability to role model exemplary ethical and professional behaviors and the medical school’s values for faculty, students, residents, and staff.
  • Ability to listen, foster teamwork, and accept accountability.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas. Faculty in the Department of Pathology serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E.
